A sensory garden is more functional than a regular garden. It aims at bringing more sense of a garden with colours to see, fragrance for smell, texture to feel and other useful components for both adults and children.
Edible landscapes are comprised of both, the vegetable and ornamental plants, in the same garden bed for efficient use of the land. Vegetable gardens are specifically designed for food production.
Edible landscaping is designed in such a way that both the vegetable and ornamental plants are planted with very minimal maintainence and easy to work with.
Some of the reasons are poor soil quality, poor grading, cutting the grass too short, no dethatching, no aeration, no lime or fertilizer application.
Potential reasons are poor soil quality, poor grading, cutting the grass too short, no dethatching, no aeration, no lime or fertilizer application.
Spring and Fall are the best times for seeding and sodding. In summer, even with frequent watering, there will be rapid evapotranspiration. Soil does not hold any moisture and leads to dryness and poor-quality lawn.
Start the lawn care right from installation of proper soil, grass, fertilizer and lime. In Spring start with aeration, dethatching and application of fertilizer and lime. Prevent cutting the grass too low. Water the lawn if there is any dry days and repeat fertilizer application during the Fall.
Turf grass does not like rocky or clay soil, it prefers well-drained sandy loam soil for a healthy turf, thus it will help the grass roots to grow and dominates the weeds and stays green.
Planting the proper grass helps in establishing a healthy green lawn. Not all grass species like shade or sun. Kentucky blue grass loves the sun and grows vigorously in sunny and well-drained soils but not in shade spots. Fescues like shade and partial shade areas.
Applying optimum fertilizer and lime to the lawn save money and turf. Lime application is important for balanced pH of the soil as Nova Scotia soils are mostly acidic. Turf is adapted to 5.5 to 7.5 pH. Three most important nutrients are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K).
- Nitrogen: Required in great quantities, helps in green colour, shoot and root density, carbohydrate reserve.
- Deficiency symptoms: Chlorosis, slow growth and low density.
- Phosphorus: Important for seed germination, initial seeding and root growth. Structural element important for a new sod establishment and seed germination.
- Deficiency symptoms: Reduced root growth, reddish leaf colour and narrow leaf blade.
- Potassium: Functional element, increases root density, helps in reducing environmental stress, increases wear tolerance and disease resistance.
- Deficiency symptoms: Poor wear tolerance.
Frequent mowing helps in maintaining healthy turf. Based on mowing height we can determine number of mows per week.
|Mowing height||1" to 1.5"||1.5" to 2.5"||2.5" to 3"|
Thatch consists of dead roots, stems and leaves. It impedes plant growth, root penetration, nutrients uptake, makes surface uneven. By dethatching we can achieve healthy lawns and above factors.
It helps increase in drainage and infiltration, removes thatch and reduces compaction from the compacted soil. Nutrient uptake will be gradually increased.
